David Dodge, former Governor of the Bank of Canada, is the Co-Chair of the Institute of International Finance. This is a very powerful policy-setting body.

Moving forward into the April G20 Summit, Dodge lists a number of priorities for Canada.

   - Beef up EI
   - adopt long-term infrastructure plans
   - scrap plans to have Provinces "match funds" on important projects
   - Accept a budget deficit (and when the economy recovers, raise taxes)
   - De-invest in the Tar Sands
   - More financial regulation

Holy cow. This guy is a neo-con, and used to preach market idolatry, low taxes and de-regulation.

Inspecting the newest Canadian federal budget, rabble.ca (one of my new favourites) uncovered this nugget:

"Scholarships granted by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council [SSHRC] will be focused on business-related degrees."

I guess I'm not surprised, a Conservative Government is likely to have priorities like this. But it does make me wonder if the Government finally caved to the powerful "Moore's the Suit People" lobby.

I saw this today as part of my "Politics of Creativity" course at Trent. I have to write a 5-7 page response to this piece, and the woman at the exhibit was quite helpful in describing the intent and methods of the artist.

Unsurprisingly, he delivered this line during a speech about the recent global economic downturn. I'm always struck by the similarities between free-market capitalists and religious leaders. Just believe...they both seem to say...it will all be OK.

I find it easier to have faith in a Benevolent Creating God who tells me I'm loved than in Old, Rich White Guys who tell me to go shopping.
